Guaranteed router connection. Setting up a router: detailed instructions for dummies. Setting up a WiFi router - connecting a laptop

Setting up a router is not an easy procedure, but we are ready to help you figure out all its intricacies. Just carefully study the instructions below, and then in just a few minutes you can easily set the desired parameters and start working!

#1. Connection

Before you configure the router yourself through a computer, you need to connect it:

  • Plug the internet cable into the WAN/Internet port;
  • Install the end of the network wire to the LAN port of the device;
  • Place the other end into the connector on the PC;
  • Plug the model into an outlet and press the power on button.
  • Ready!

We hope that this brief instruction helped you figure out the first steps, but you can read more about the connection process on the website. Now you can safely proceed to the instructions, which tell you how to properly configure the WiFi router yourself.

#2. Login to the web interface

We want to warn you that setting up a WiFi router online through a browser can only be done after turning on the device. When you activate the work, the distribution of the wireless network with factory settings (login, password) will begin. You can change the router settings in a special web interface that each device is equipped with.

Important! To open the setup interface, you need to connect your computer to the device. Internet is not required.

To open the site for configuring the router, do the following:

  • Open a browser;
  • Enter the IP address in the address bar;
  • In the window that opens, log in - enter your username and password.
  • The address, network name and pin code for entering are indicated on the sticker located on the back of the router.
  • Some devices do not have login details - they need to be set after logging into the interface.

Please note that some manufacturers set the parameters on their own - then you do not need to do anything when you turn it on for the first time.

#3. Setting instructions

Most routers have the option of a special wizard that will help you quickly set the desired parameters. For example, here, the item is called "Quick Setup":

The most important thing you need to set up:

  1. Internet connection;
  2. WiFi is a network.

Let's deal with the first parameter first. Our main goal is, of course, the operation of the Internet on devices:

  • Open the general settings tab. Most often found in the WAN or Internet section;
  • Specify the type of connection of the provider, username and password - you can see the information in the contract;
  • If the provider requires you to go through the binding of the MAC address, specify the required data (from the contract).

Important! If the provider uses (DHCP), then the connection to the network will occur automatically. Skip this section of the instructions, you do not need to reconfigure the router.

  • Open the section called Wi-Fi. It may be called differently - Wireless network / Wireless / Wireless mode;
  • In the "Network name" or "SSID" field, enter a new name (only in Latin);
  • In the "Wireless Network Key" field, enter the invented identification code;
  • Protection type - WPA2 - Personal;
  • Change the region to the location in the corresponding line;
  • Save your changes.

If you want to change the router settings, we recommend that you change the factory access code. This is important if you want to protect yourself from unauthorized entry. Here's how to do it:

  • Find the security or privacy settings section;
  • Change the data to a new, secure code.

All of the above instructions apply if you need to set up a new router instead of the old one or install completely new equipment. By the way, we suggest you watch a general video on how to configure the router. It is perfect for those who are not confident in their abilities, because it shows the whole process step by step and in detail!

Now you know everything about how to set up the Internet on a Wi-Fi router through a computer - use our article to achieve the result. Just follow the instructions and in a few minutes you will be able to successfully work on the network.

Now on sale there are a huge number of different Wi-Fi routers from different manufacturers. And that's good, there are plenty to choose from. But right after buying a router, we need to install, connect and configure it. And if the connection process practically does not differ depending on the model, then the setup process itself and the page with the settings of the router can be different even from one manufacturer.

It is very difficult to give detailed and step-by-step instructions for setting up different models within the framework of one article. But I'll try. In this article, I will describe in detail and show how to install and configure a Wi-Fi router. No matter what make and model you have. This universal instruction is suitable for both setting up a new router and reconfiguring it. You can do everything yourself. And it is not necessary to pay for the setup of specialists.

Entering the router settings. How to access the web interface?

Each router has its own web interface (site with settings, control panel), which can be accessed through a browser by going to the appropriate address.

Important! To enter the router settings and configure it, your device (PC, laptop, smartphone, tablet) must be connected to the router via a cable, or via a Wi-Fi network. In this case, access to the Internet on the computer may not be. You don't need internet to access the control panel!

If your computer has a high-speed connection (may be with the name of your provider), then after connecting through the router, you do not need to run it!

To enter the settings we need find out the address our router and factory username and password for authorization. This information is located on the body of the device itself. Looks like this:

On a computer or mobile device that is connected to the router, open a browser (Opera, Chrome, Yandex.Browser, etc.) and go to the address indicated on the case. Or try 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1.

Important! The address is entered in the address bar, not in the search bar. Many people get confused, and instead of a page with settings, they end up on a page with search results of some search engine.

On the login page, you need to enter a username and password. The factory ones are indicated on the body of the device. Most often these are admin and admin. On some models, the default settings are not protected, and immediately after entering the control panel, you need to set a login and password.

How to set up a Wi-Fi router?

In order to use the Internet through a router, you need at least:

  • Set up an internet connection.
  • Set up a Wi-Fi network.

In most cases, this is sufficient. I also advise you to change the password that protects the web interface of the router. There are also settings for IPTV, USB drives, parental control, etc., but not everyone needs them.

In the control panel of almost every router there is a so-called "Quick Setup Wizard", aka "Quick Setup". On some devices, it is opened immediately after entering the control panel. With it, you can set up a Wi-Fi router step by step. Internet connection, wireless network, etc. For an example, how it looks like with TP-Link:

You can try it, it's very convenient.

Internet setup. The most important step

The main thing is correctly configure the router to connect to the provider. If he can not connect to the Internet, then on all devices there will be a connection "Without access to the Internet." Many users who try to set everything up with their own hands most often encounter problems at this stage.

Each ISP uses a certain type of connection. Dynamic IP (DHCP), Static IP, PPPoE, L2TP, PPTP. This type of connection must be specified in the control panel of the router, and set certain parameters that are issued by the Internet provider.

Important! You must know exactly what type of connection your ISP has. Also all the necessary data to connect (Username: Password) if they are needed. As a rule, this information is indicated in the contract that you received when connecting to the Internet.

Some providers bind by MAC address. This is also desirable to clarify.

If your provider uses a "Dynamic IP" (DHCP) connection, then the Internet should work immediately after the connection, since this type of connection is set by default on routers.

If the Internet through the router is already working (and you didn't run any connections on the computer), then you can skip this section and go straight to setting up Wi-Fi.

When the connection type is PPPoE, L2TP, PPTP, or Static IP (which is very rare), then you need to set the necessary parameters. Usually, this is the username and password that the provider gave you. In the control panel, the section with these settings is most often called: "WAN", "Internet", "Internet".

For example, how the PPPoE connection setup on an ASUS router looks like:

Other examples:

Target: so that the Internet through the router will work on all devices. By cable and Wi-Fi. If this does not happen, then it is pointless to continue the setup.

You can always call the provider and clarify what parameters and where you need to specify. Many of them help over the phone.

I hope everything worked out for you.

Change Wi-Fi network settings

I highly recommend changing the Wi-Fi network name and password. It is also desirable to set your region. Everything is simple there. You can do this in the section with wireless network settings. It can be called differently: "Wi-Fi", "Wireless network", "Wireless", "Wireless mode". If you have a dual-band router, then the settings must be set separately for the network at a frequency of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

  • In the field "Network name" (SSID) you need to register a new name. English letters.
  • In the "Password" field (wireless key) think up and write down a password. Minimum 8 characters. Protection type - WPA2 - Personal.
  • Well, there should be a "Region" field. Change it to yours.
  • IPTV on ASUS routers.

    If something goes wrong during the setup process, you can always reset the settings to the factory settings and try to set everything up again. On the case, find the "Reset" or "Reset" button, press it and hold for about 10 seconds. By the indicators, you will understand when the reset occurred.

    You can leave questions in the comments. Only I have a small request, describe the problem in detail. Write the router model. And it is very difficult to understand and advise something when you do not understand the question itself. Best wishes!

If you have more than one computer at home, but several, then the question usually arises of connecting them to the Internet at the same time. For example, I have 2 laptops, and even Android, which would not refuse Wi-Fi. My provider Garant offers 2 options: either a separate contract for each computer, or a router. From an economic point of view, of course, a router is the most profitable, and given that laptops can work via Wi-Fi, this is also the absence of wires.

However, everything turned out to be not so simple, we have no choice of routers in Gomel, but not everyone can work with the Guarantor. In general, the situation is approximately as follows: those that work correctly either do not exist in Gomel at all, or they cost an order of magnitude more expensive. On the Garant forum, I read in one of the posts that D-Link DIR-320 works fine, but there was no description of its settings. It is not difficult to find this router in Gomel, for example, or in another place, and its price does not bite - about 200,000 bel. rubles.

Fortunately, I managed to set this device to 100%, now I have the Internet, network, DC ++, IPTV and everything else working on 2 computers at the same time, and it’s exactly the same whether by wire or by Wi-Fi.

So now oh settings. First of all, you need to write down your network data, as they will be needed during setup. When the network cable of the Garant is connected to the computer, double-click on the network connection, and in the window that appears on the “Support” tab, click “Details”.

We write down the data that is here in a notepad. I hid mine, but as an example, I will now write completely left ones, which I will continue to use in tuning, you naturally write down your own. So:

Physical Address (MAC): F7-8U-55-33-66-F8
IP address: 10.35.8.162
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 10.35.8.1
DNS server: 10.3.2.290

Now, while we have not yet connected the router and are on the Internet directly from the Garant cable, download the latest firmware for the router and preferably the crack from here, or from. I have the latest firmware version 1.21 and the crack to it in the archive. On the standard firmware, you will not be able to configure the router!

We disconnect the network cable of the Guarantor from the computer and connect it to the gray connector on the router, the cable that comes with the kit, insert one end into one of the blue connectors, the other into the computer. We connect the adapter, also included in the kit, to the router and plug it into a power outlet.

Now open any browser on the computer and type http://192.168.0.1 in the site address entry line, the router authorization page should open in front of you. Enter the login: admin, leave the password blank and log in to the interface. We immediately go to the MAINTENANCE tab in the top menu and assign a password for authorization in the router interface, which is absent by default.

We save the settings, most likely you will be thrown back to the authorization page, so we authorize again by entering our password and again go to the MAINTENANCE tab, where we select Firmware Update in the left menu.

Here we click “Browse”, select the new firmware file (in my archive it is dir320_v1.21_a3ia.bin), and click “Apply” to start the flashing process. After the end of this process, we again return here and proceed to Russification. Under the section for selecting the firmware, there is the same section for selecting language files, so we also click “Browse” there, select the language file dir320_v1.21_8c1b_langpack_ru.bin, click “Apply” and our interface should become in Russian. If this does not happen, reboot the router with the “Reboot” button, which is located on the left.

The preliminary settings are over for this, so let's proceed to the main ones. On the first tab in the top menu “Installation”, click the button “Setting up an Internet connection manually” at the bottom of the page.

Internet connection in use: select “Russia L2TP (Dual Access)”;
Just in case, first select “Static IP address” and enter the data that we saved before, when the computer was still directly connected to the network, then switch to “Dynamic IP address”;
MAC address: You can enter the MAC of your computer, which we also saved, or call the Garant and ask to change your MAC to a new one, i.e. on the MAC of the router, which can be found on the device itself. In this case, this field is not required;
IP Address/Server Name: depending on the tariff, we write unlim.vpn or vpn.vpn;
L2TP account: your login to connect to the Internet (like your home address);
L2TP password: enter the password for connecting to the Internet and repeat it in the next field;
Connection mode: choose "Always".
Now we click “Save settings” and, in theory, your router should already connect to the Internet, as evidenced by the blue glow of the planet image on the left side of the router and the inscription “Internet Online” below. But in any case, let's continue the settings, and at this stage, the non-connect should not worry us, as it can be caused by the simple need to restart the router.

Here, “Enable DNS Relay” and “Enable DHCP server” should be checked, you can change the network address of the router, you can change the DHCP IP address range (for example, I put 150 in the first field, i.e. now the first IP address that will give the router to the computer will be 192.168.0.150).

We save the settings and if we lost connection with the router, then double-click on the network connection icon and on the “Support” tab, click “Fix”.

Now let's go to the top menu to the "ADVANCED SETTINGS" tab, then select "Routing" in the left menu.

Here we configure everything, as shown in this screenshot, in the “Destination” and “Subnet mask” we write the data from the screenshot, in the “Gateway” field in the first 3 fields we write the gateway address that you saved when the Garant network cable is connected to the computer , and in the latter we indicate the first IP address that the router will issue to the computer, i.e. what you entered in “LAN Setup”.

Now we reboot the router and for reliability the computer, and at this stage you should already be connected to the Internet and be able to visit local sites, IPTV should also work, though for this in the IP-TV Player settings on the “General” tab in the “Network interface” field ” you need to select the IP address that the router gave you.

PS: Do you know that the color of your eyes can be changed very easily? Say it's impossible? I thought so too, until I saw a girl I knew with bright diamond eyes. To be honest, it's mesmerizing. And all that is needed for this is colored contact lenses, which are affordable for everyone. And their use is not only safe, but also useful.

With the development of the level and prevalence of the Internet, the number of devices that use the World Wide Web has also increased. Smartphones, tablets, laptops, and even TVs all require an internet connection to work comfortably. When there are more than two such devices at home, the question arises of how to connect them at the same time. In this case, a useful device will come to the rescue - a router, the purpose of which is to distribute the Internet connection between various devices. There are several types of routers, so before buying, you need to determine which one is right for you.

By type of connection

The most common type is a router with an Ethernet connection. This refers to a standard network cable (called "twisted pair") that can be connected directly to a computer. But if you want to connect several gadgets, then you must immediately connect a router (more on this below). The connection speed can reach 1 Gb / s, it depends on the capabilities of your network card and provider.

The second type of connection is called ADSL. It is used to obtain an Internet connection via telephone networks and is more common in the private sector, where there is no possibility to connect via Ethernet. If you have a telephone at home, then there is no need to pull additional wires. True, you will not see speeds of more than 24 Mbps (this is the maximum speed, subject to a high-quality modern telephone line).

An LTE connection is the third type of router. With this connection, you get the Internet without wires via 3G or 4G networks. So far, this is the most expensive and least common connection method.

If you have decided on the type of router, then you can go directly to the question of how to install a router. And you should start by choosing a location.

Choose a place

Routers are both wired and wireless. If you need to connect both your phone and tablet to the network at the same time, then you should ask how to install a WiFi router at home. Moreover, a wireless router does not exclude connections using wires.

Before connecting, it is advisable to choose the optimal location of the router. Avoid placing on concrete lintels or in remote corners of the apartment, as this will reduce the usable area of coverage. The ideal place is in the center of the room. Most often, the connection point is limited by the location of the incoming Internet cable. It makes sense to immediately connect and configure the router. And only if the signal level does not suit you, then start to "bother" about the location.

We start connecting

Connect the cable to de-energized devices. For an Ethernet connection, simply plug the incoming network cable into the dedicated jack on the back of the router (labeled WAN). If you have an ADSL connection, then you should use the so-called splitter (included) to separate the telephone and Internet signal.

For the initial setup, you will also need to connect a network cable (also included) to a laptop or desktop computer. This is necessary to enter the administrative panel of the router. We will consider the connection process using the example of a router manufactured by TP-Link. If you know how to install a TP-Link router, then there will be no problems connecting devices from other manufacturers, since the principle is the same everywhere.

We go to the administrative part

In order to enter the device interface, you need to have the following data: IP address, login and password. This information is printed on a label on the bottom of the router. For most models, universal login data will do. Address: 192.168.1.1, which must be entered into the address bar of the browser. After entering the address and pressing the Enter key, a login and password entry window will appear (by default, the login is admin and the password is admin). But there may be options, as in the photo below, where the address of the settings page is different. Therefore, check the label or instructions for the device.

After entering your login and password, you will be taken to the administrative part, where you first need to open the DHCP Server tab. There you need to activate this server, that is, check Enable or "Enable" (depending on the interface language), and click the "Save" button.

The next step in the process of how to install a Wi-Fi router is to determine the type of connection.

Connection type

If you do not have information about the type of connection, then you should check with your Internet provider. Without the correct settings, the Internet will not work. The simplest option is a type called "dynamic IP address". You only need to select this option and click the save button. In rare cases, you will also need to fill in the "Host name" field.

A rarer type - with a static IP address - requires additional filling in the fields with the IP address, default gateway, subnet mask and DNS server (provided by the provider). And when connecting PPPoE (Point-to-point protocol over Ethernet), you should fill in the fields with the username, password and password confirmation.

After setting up the Internet connection, you can proceed to the question, how to set the TP-Link router to wireless transmission mode?

WiFi setup

To do this, you need to find a tab called "Wireless Mode" (options are possible). Then you need to enter the SSID name of the network and select the mode mode. If you are not sure that all your devices support the latest n-mode, then it is better to choose a mixed version of bgn.

Next, you should save the settings and reboot the router. After that, let's move on to the question of how to set a WiFi router in protected mode. For these purposes, the settings provide a section "Network Protection" (Wireless Security). Here you should select the WPA-PSK / WPA2-PSK encryption mode and enter a 12-digit password. In the future, this password will need to be entered once on each new device that you want to connect to the network.

After this step, the question of how to install a Wi-Fi router can be considered closed.

Possible problems

If you can't access the admin panel, try changing your browser. Some devices from different manufacturers have poor compatibility with the Google Chrome browser.

Be careful when entering the router's IP address. If the firmware was updated, it may become 192.168.0.1 instead of 192.168.1.1 (or vice versa).

If after setting up the router you have a weak wireless network signal, then consider installing the WiFi router in another, more open place. Sometimes in the administrative settings you can select the signal strength level. Some router models have detachable antennas. If you change them to more powerful ones, you will be able to significantly expand the coverage area without changing the router (which is much cheaper).

Conclusion

The instruction described above is universal. It will help you in deciding how to install a D Link router, ASUS, Netgear, Linksys, etc. The differences can only be in the administrative panel interface or minor nuances. Provided that you have done everything correctly, all that remains is to connect your gadgets and enjoy the convenience of using the Internet without wires.

Wi-Fi provides a fast wireless Internet access without being tied to wires and a modem. All you need is a device with a Wi-Fi module - using it, several devices can connect to the network at once.

To properly configure the router, you do not need special education

Buying and setting up a router will take a little time and does not require special knowledge. To consider in detail all the stages of connection, we will use the settings for TP-Link brand models, the most popular among a large number of users.

Before moving on to installing Wi-Fi, you need to figure out how to set up the router and make sure it works properly.

How to connect a Wi-Fi router? First, we choose a place for it - the main thing is that it does not stand on the table where the computer is located or on the system unit, since in such cases interference in work often occurs. Therefore, we move it a little away from other equipment and place it closer to the center of the house so that the waves cover as much of the area as possible.

To find out how much the router covers the room, download special applications after installation - they will make the device work as efficiently as possible.

On the back of the router there are the following connectors (in the basic version):

  • 4 Lan - port for connecting to a PC. A maximum of 4 computers can be connected to one device at the same time. We insert the cable into one of the ports, connect the other part to the connector on the back of the system unit.
  • A cable with an Internet connection is installed in the WAN cable socket.
  • Plug the power cable into a socket.

You will also see a reset button and an on/off button here - their functions are clear. When you figured out the wires and inserted them where necessary, an icon about the new connection will appear on the bottom of the desktop. Now we need to find out if your PC has installed the router correctly.

Device Manager - setting up a computer with a router

How to enter the router settings and check if the computer correctly recognized the equipment. We use the Control Panel, stop at the Network Connections chapter - if you have Windows XP, in Windows Vista / 7/8 this section is designated as "Network and Control", "Network and Sharing Center".

Current connections will appear here - select "Local Area Connection", look at the properties. You will now see a list of components where you stop at "Internet Protocol TCP/IP". Here we check how the checkboxes are marked:

  • Usually, lines are highlighted that talk about automatically obtaining an IP address and DNS server.
  • For some providers, the information is entered manually, so you will see the completed lines. Check them with the data in the contract or instructions for the device, enter the correct numbers if they do not match.

The next step is to go to how to enter the router settings.

Browser and login options

The router is configured using a browser.

Enter your IP address in the address bar. In most cases, this combination is 192.168.1.1 - the standard version of the address, which, however, differs with some Internet service providers. After pressing Enter, you will see the Wi-Fi router settings. If this does not happen, then the IP address is not suitable and you need to enter other numbers.

How to find out the IP address:

  • In documents or on the back of the router.
  • If, when entering the properties of “Local Area Connections”, the IP address field was previously filled in, and there was no automatic detection, copy it.
  • Try checking other addresses - the last two values might look like 0.1, 0.2, or 1.2.
  • Enter in the command line (it opens through the "Start") the action cmd, and then - ping 168.x.1, and you will be shown all the parameters of the device.

After entering the IP, a form for entering a login and password appeared in front of you. We fill both lines here with the word admin, after which the parameters of the router itself will appear directly.

Hardware flashing

First of all, setting up the router begins with flashing it to the current version - after the release of each model, a lot of time passes, during which improvements are made, errors are corrected. Therefore, installing the most up-to-date version will help to avoid malfunctions.

You can get it on the manufacturer's website. Download the file and go to the parameters again (you know how to enter the router settings through the browser) in System Tools, subsection Firmware Upgrade. Here we select "Browse ...", upload the file and after clicking Upgrade, the update will begin.

Clarification: firmware is optional, so you can do without it - this will not interfere with the operation of the device.

Internet connection setup

After rebooting the Wi-Fi equipment (it will happen automatically), we proceed to setting the parameters for accessing the World Wide Web. In the System Tools section, select the Password tab and enter, at your discretion, new data to enter the settings.

Now, in the Network section, we stop at the WAN column, where we select the type of connection provided by the provider. Mostly this is a dynamic IP (Dynamic), but in some cases this option is not correct.

How to find out your connection type?

It is listed in the documents along with the rest of the data for setting up a Wi-Fi router. If they are not available, find them on the Internet service provider's website or contact a specialist by phone.

Note: if you need a different type of connection (not dynamic), enter additional information yourself in the fields located in this form after selecting the desired option.

The rest of the fields will be filled in automatically when you select the Dynamic IP option.

Let's move on to the Wireless section. We put a tick in front of Enable (if there is such a line), in the Wireless Network Name or SSID we come up with a name for the connection, which will be seen by everyone who wants to use Wi-Fi. Below there may be a tab for selecting your country - specify it, save the changes made and proceed to the next step of our setup.

Wireless Security - filling in this part of the parameters should be taken seriously, because here you can secure your network from unauthorized access. We select WPA / WPA2 and set a password in the PSK Password field - no one will be able to establish a connection with your Wi-Fi without it.

Optional: MAC Address and copying it

Sometimes providers bind a Wi-Fi access point to a PC network card. This equipment has a personal MAC code, which we copy to the router settings - for this you need to click the "Clone MAC - Code" button.

Where to find it? Depending on the manufacturer, the address can be located in different sections, mainly in Wireless. In the most common TP-Link models, the MAC address is located in the Network folder; to copy it, you need to select a special column.

Wi-Fi router setup completed successfully. Confirm the reboot - the router will prompt you to do it, then all the changes made will take effect.

Wireless access is convenient, practical, setting up such an Internet connection is simple, it takes a little time and a little effort. Now you know how to enter the router settings and fill in all the necessary fields to get quick access, no matter where you are in the room, and use the Internet on any device that supports this technology.
